The Stagcom 28th May Round Up
Aren't bank holiday weekends just the best? You're probably all feeling a little worse for wear, and trying to work out if it's Monday or Tuesday. Well, we can confirm that it is Tuesday and we can also bring you up to speed on everything that happened over the weekend!
Debut Delight
Friday evening seems like an eternity ago now, but England did beat Australia 2-1 in their second warm up match before Euro 2016. 18-year-old debutant Marcus Rashford stole the headlines as he became the youngest ever debutant to score for England when he netted after just three minutes! Three Lions skipper Wayne Rooney added another in the second-half before Eric Dier scored a late own goal.
Hull Return to Big Time
370 days after falling out of the Premier League, Hull City returned after defeating Sheffield Wednesday 1-0 in the Championship Play-Off Final. The Tigers dominated the game, but for much of the match struggled to find a way past Wednesday's goalkeeper Kieren Westwood who was in outstanding form. That was until the 78th minute when Mo Diame curled in a long range effort to break the deadlock and give Hull the victory!
Real Win on Penalties
Atletico Madrid suffered Champions League Final heartbreak at the hands of local rivals Real Madrid for the second time in three seasons on Saturday night. Sergio Ramos gave Real a first-half lead after a flick on from Gareth Bale. Yannick Carrasco scored a second-half equaliser after a fabulous ball in from Juanfran. However, it was Juanfran who was later the villain; the Atletico right back hit the post with his penalty in the shootout. Cristiano Ronaldo scored the decisive spot kick, and duly took his shirt off in celebration.
Sarries do the Double
Saracens completed a Premiership and European double with a 28-20 win over Exeter Chiefs on Saturday afternoon - becoming the first English team to do so since 2004. Sarries did most of their damage in a dominant first-half display, and led 23-6 at the break after Duncan Taylor and Chris Wyles tries. The Chiefs mounted a second-half comeback and reduced their deficit to just three points, but a late Alex Goode score secured the win for Saracens.
England Start Summer With Win
England kicked off their Summer Internationals with a convincing 27-13 win over Wales. Warren Gatland's side scored an early try through Rob Evans, but England scored five unanswered tries to claim a comfortable victory. The win could have been even more comfortable had George Ford had his shooting boots on; the fly-half missed six out of seven kicks!
Captain Cook
England captain Alastair Cook became the youngest player to score 10,000 runs in test cricket in the Second Test win over Sri Lanka. The opening batsman eclipsed Sachin Tendulkar's record that had stood for 11 years. Some achievement!
Hamilton Kick Starts Season
Lewis Hamilton claimed a superb victory in the Monaco Grand Prix on Sunday to give his season a lift. Hamilton held off the challenge of Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo to claim his first race victory this campaign and reduce the deficit to 24 points as he tries to catch Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg.
