The Stagcom 2nd May Round Up
Did anyone else find it difficult getting out of bed this morning? That extra day off from the bank holiday can really throw you off! We can confirm today is Tuesday, not Monday.
There was certainly a lot going on over the weekend in the world of sport, and we kept on top of everything to bring you our weekend round-up.
CHAMPION OF THE WORLD
Anthony Joshua produced a stunning knockout win over Wladimir Klitschko to claim the WBA world heavyweight title in front of a record 90,000 fans at Wembley Stadium.
The pre-fight excitement was huge and the fight more than lived up to the hype. It will no doubt be remembered as one of the greatest fights in the modern era.
AJ knocked Klitschko down in the fifth round, but the Ukrainian responded by putting Joshua down in the sixth - the first time he has been floored in his professional career. In both of those rounds it looked as if the fight may be over, but the pair recovered to take the fight to the 11th.
It was then that Joshua landed a damaging uppercut, which handed him the initiative to stop his opponent. The question will now be, who will the Brit fight next? Many want to see him come up against Tyson Fury, but the more realistic next opponent would be America's Deontay Wilder.
STILL AHEAD
Chelsea's lead at the top of the Premier League remains four-points after both they and Tottenham Hotspur won over the weekend.
The leaders produced an impressive display to defeat Everton 3-0 at Goodison Park. Pedro put them ahead with a stunning turn and shot, before late goals from Gary Cahill and Willian sealed the victory.
Spurs kept pace with their title rivals with a 2-0 win over Arsenal in the last ever North London derby at White Hart Lane. After a close first-half, Spurs upped the tempo second-half and were rewarded with two quick fire goals from Dele Alli and a Harry Kane penalty to claim their ninth successive league win.
At the other end of the table Swansea remain two points from safety after a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford, after Hull's 0-0 draw with Southampton on Saturday.
SURPRISE WIN
Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas claimed his first Formula 1 victory at the Russian Grand Prix in Sochi. Beginning third on the grid, Bottas soon overtook the Ferrari pair Sebastien Vettel and Kimi Raikonnen and dominated until the closing stages.
Vettel managed to get within a second and a half of Bottas with ten laps to go, but the Finn was able to maintain his lead and get his first win. It was a weekend to forget for Mercedes team mate Lewis Hamilton, who finished back in fourth.
TITLE DEFENCE
Mark Selby defended his World Championship title after a stunning comeback to defeat John Higgins.
The 'Jester from Leicester' had trailed Higgins 10-4 at one stage, but then won nine of the next ten frames to go 13-11 ahead. Higgins formed a mini revival to take it to 16-15, but Selby won the next two to claim his third world title in the space of four years and retain his spot as world number one.
