The Stagcom 5th June Round Up
Monday has come around again and it's time to reflect on another weekend. Whether yours was a heavy one or more relaxed, we hope you enjoyed a well-earned rest!
As always, there was plenty of sport to keep us entertained and it did not disappoint. We stayed on top of all the action to give you our take in our weekly round up.
REAL RULE
Real Madrid defeated Juventus 4-1 at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff to win back-to-back Champions League titles. Cristiano Ronaldo was the star of the show as he scored a brace that helped Real win a record 12th European crown.
Juventus started the better of the two sides and Miralem Pjanic drew a fantastic save from Keylor Navas early on. But it was Real who took the lead when Ronaldo converted Dani Carvajal's pull back. Mario Mandzukic then levelled the tie with one of the great Champions League goals; a stunning overhead kick.
The score stayed level until the hour mark when Casemiro's deflected long range effort made it past the outstretched arm of Gianluigi Buffon. Luka Modric then crossed for Ronaldo to score his second at the near post, before substitute Marco Asensio scored a fourth in the closing stages.
The triumph means Zinedine Zidane has won back-to-back European titles since taking over in January 2016. Surely he now must be considered one of the elite football managers?
WINNING START
The British and Irish Lions began their tour of New Zealand with a dogged victory of the Provincial Barbarians in Whangarei.
It wasn't a game or performance that will live long in the memory, with many blaming the Lion's poor display on being jet-lagged. After falling behind in the first-half, a try from Anthony Watson restored the tourists leads, before Owen Farrell extended the lead. The Barbarians piled on the pressure late on, but the Lions held firm.
Their next tour match is against Super Rugby side Blues and their performance will have to be much better against a higher standard of opposition.
MURRAY MARCHES ON
Andy Murray produced his best performance of the French Open so far as he defeated Juan Martin del Potro in straight sets to reach the fourth round. Murray will now face hard-hitting Russian Karen Khachanov later today as he looks to go one better than last year and win his maiden French Open title.
The weekend saw British number two Kyle Edmund's tournament come to an end as he lost out to South Africa's Kevin Anderson in a five-set thriller.
ICC TROPHY ACTION
England weren't in action over the weekend but there were still two matches that took place in the ICC Champions Trophy.
South Africa overcame Sri Lanka by 96 runs at the Oval. Sri Lanks restricted South Africa to 299-6 with some disciplined bowling, but were then skittled out for 203.
Virat Kohli was the star for India as they convincingly beat Pakistan at Edgbaston. An unbeaten 81 from the Indian skipper helped steer his side to 319-3, before they bowled Pakistan out for just 164.
Next up in the tournament, Australia face Bangladesh today and England host New Zealand in Cardiff tomorrow.
