The Stagcom 9th January Round Up

January can be a long month, the post-Christmas struggle is real. Money is tight, not much is going on and the weather is generally crap. Luckily, one thing us lads can always rely on for a pick-me-up is some sport.

This weekend was no different, with plenty to watch over the weekend. Here, we give you our take on the weekend's events and allow you to catch up in case you missed anything.

FA Cup

The Third Round of the oldest cup competition in the world took centre stage this weekend, which is the stage where Premier League and Championship teams enter. Traditionally, this round throws up a few shocks and this weekend was no different.

On Saturday afternoon, there were three Premier League team exits at the hands of lower league opposition. Bournemouth succumbed to a 3-0 defeat away to League One side Millwall. Eddie Howe changed pretty much his entire starting eleven; a decision he must be regretting now.

Stoke were humbled by Wolves, losing 2-0 at the Bet365 Stadium. Mark Hughes named a strong line-up, which made the result all the more surprising, and he admitted afterwards that he had hoped for a good cup run this season.

West Brom suffered the same fate at the Hawthorns as Steve McClaren's derby won 2-1 to progress to the Fourth Round. Tony Pulis threw everything at Derby - ending the game with just two defenders on the pitch - but they were unable to force a replay.

Arguably the biggest shock of the weekend saw League Two Plymouth Argyle force a replay after a 0-0 draw at Anfield. Jurgen Klopp named Liverpool's youngest ever team, but there was still plenty of strength within the side. The Reds now have another fixture added to their already busy schedule!

Finally Defeated

Novak Djokovic defeated Sir Andy Murray in the Qatar Open final to defend his title and end the Briton's winning streak of 28 consecutive ATP Tour matches.

Murray still remains world number one despite his 6-3 5-7 6-4 defeat to the world number two Novak Djokovic. At one stage it looked like the Scot might make a miraculous comeback after saving three match points, but Djokovic was ultimately too strong.

Both players' attention now turns to the first grand slam of the year - the Australian Open - which begins on 16th January.

Same Old Story

Leicester Tigers played their first game since parting ways with Richard Cockerill, but it didn't result in an upturn in fortunes as they lost 22-16 to Wasps.

Aviva Premiership leaders Wasps raced into a 19-0 lead and it looked like they would win at a canter. After the break Tigers steadied the ship and did bring it back to 19-16 only for a late penalty to make it a six-point win for the hosts!
